SMART Saddle Sizing

Due to the flexible design of the SMART saddle, both the fitting and sizing system is different to traditional saddles. SMART saddles are available in seat sizes 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. Different width backs can be accommodated without manual adjustment as SMART Saddles simply flex-to-fit.

Size to the Rider

As a rule, if the rider is the appropriate size for their horse, then their SMART saddle size will also be suitable for their horse.

Height and weight of the rider are the most influential factors when considering saddle size, along with hip to knee length; if longer than average, the rider may require a longer seat to give sufficient room to achieve optimal support. This is particularly important where a short stirrup length is adopted e.g. in the jumping models.

The saddle style is decided according to the rider preference and the discipline it will be used for, some preferring to be seated snugly, whilst others prefer a roomier feel.

Flex-to-fit

The easy-fit SMART Balance Pad system and adjustable knee and thigh blocks are used, where necessary, to adjust the saddle balance and achieve optimal fit and support for both horse and rider, allowing a customised feel and easy fitting of one saddle to multiple horses/riders.

Within reason, short-backed and small horses can be comfortably ridden in a slightly larger SMART™ saddle, which is designed to engage with the back and trunk, and subsequently lift and flex with the longissimus dorsi. The SMART saddle will therefore not impinge the scapulae or beyond the last rib.

The Process

Our team at SMART HQ will determine the optimal size/style saddles for you and your horse to try at your SMART Test Ride, helping you to find the perfect SMART saddle.

We can guide you through the difference between various saddle sizes, styles and models. Advice on optimal fit and balance for horse and rider performance is available both remotely, via email, phone in person or with a SMART Advisor where location allows.

SMART Steps:

1. Size to the rider
2. Fit to the horse
3. Balance for the rider

Key Information:

- Rider height
- Rider weight
- Hip to knee length
- Riding style & preferred stirrup length
- Preferred knee & thigh support

SMART saddles should not be measured in the same way as a traditional treed saddle due to their flexible form; there are no fixed points to measure from/between. Comparing the measurements of a SMART saddle with the measurements of a different brand or design of saddle is therefore not advised. Please contact SMART Saddles directly if you have any queries on sizing.
