Choosing the right saddle: Where does SMART fit into the mix?

At SMART Saddles, our approach has always been grounded in the belief that saddle fit must focus on both the horse and the rider for optimum results. SMART Saddles are designed to be highly adaptable and can be fitted to virtually any horse, which is one of their greatest strengths. However, even with this level of versatility, it is not realistic to claim that there is one single saddle that will be the right choice for every combination.

Not one-size fits all

Horses vary enormously in conformation, movement and rate of development, just as riders differ in skill, preference and ambition, and both continue to change over time. So, while SMART Saddles can work successfully across an exceptionally broad spectrum, the reality remains that no single saddle will ever be the perfect answer in every situation - if it were, it would be easy.

What we do know, however, is that SMART Saddles offer a highly credible and compelling choice for many horses and riders because they are designed to respond to the realities of change. The flexible structure, close-contact feel, responsive features and adjustability provide a level of adaptability that traditional rigid designs simply cannot replicate. This allows the saddle to work with the horse as they develop, rather than against them, supporting freedom of movement, rider stability and consistent performance over time.

We have complete confidence in the benefits SMART Saddles bring, from their longevity and practical value to the way they support communication between horse and rider. For many combinations, this results in a noticeably improved way of going, greater comfort and a more balanced, secure riding experience.

At the same time, we recognise that the saddle market is broad, and that some riders will explore different styles and brands, reflecting the access riders have to a wide range of saddles and qualified professionals who can support informed decision-making.

Be prepared for changes

Purchasing a saddle is, by its nature, both an emotional and financial investment. Horses can change shape quickly as a result of work, muscle development, weight fluctuation, lameness, management and seasonal variation, meaning a saddle may fit appropriately on the day it is assessed and – due to normal changes - require adjustment not long afterwards. A fitter can only work with what is in front of them at the time of the fitting, which is why saddle fitting should always be viewed as an ongoing process rather than a one-off event.

Supporting Progression

SMART Saddles were developed with this changing landscape in mind. The flexible design allows the saddle to adapt as a horse’s shape changes, enabling it to be refitted over time and, in many cases, adjusted for different horses ridden by the same person. This adaptability provides longevity and practical value while prioritising comfort, stability and freedom of movement for both horse and rider. The result is a saddle that supports progression, whether that means bringing a young horse into work, maintaining comfort through development, or providing consistency across multiple horses.

A full range of SMART Saddles, from discipline-specific designs to more versatile multi-discipline models, allows riders to choose according to their individual needs and preferences. Each model can then be further refined to create a more tailored feel, with adjustable knee and thigh support and a balancing system that helps position the rider effectively without restriction. This level of personalisation supports comfort, stability and performance, ensuring the saddle works with the rider as well as the horse.

We are aware that needs evolve over time; a horse’s workload may increase, a rider’s goals may shift, or preferences in feel and discipline may change. There may be a point at which a different saddle style feels more appropriate. What matters is that decisions are made thoughtfully, based on experience, professional guidance and the needs of the horse and rider at that time.

Dynamic assessment

Whatever the saddle brand or design, working with a suitably trained and qualified fitter remains essential. A thorough fitting process should always include a ridden assessment, because static evaluation alone cannot fully demonstrate how a saddle performs in use. Observing the horse and rider in motion allows the horse–saddle–rider interaction to be assessed properly, as well as the horse’s overall way of going and behavioural responses. The only exception to this would be when purchasing for an unbacked horse, where ridden assessment is not yet possible - although fit should then be reviewed shortly after they begin work.

As the equestrian industry continues to evolve and promote best practice, there is increasing recognition that innovative saddle designs have a place alongside more traditional saddles, and that results come from understanding what works for each individual partnership. SMART Saddles play a key role within that landscape by offering a design with genuinely adaptable features, proven longevity and performance benefits that riders can feel in the saddle and see in their horse’s movement.

"As a qualified saddle fitter I now only supply SMART Saddles because they move with the horse, allowing freedom, balance, comfort, and adjustability for both horse and rider. My saddle fitting training was always that horses should change shape and we should welcome this. SMART Saddles allow that natural transformation to happen. They just work! "

Which would you choose?

Ultimately, the right saddle is not defined by habit, reputation or marketing, but by how well it serves the unique horse and rider combination. Taking the time to assess carefully, to work with a suitably qualified fitter and to review fit as your horse develops will always lead to better, more sustainable results.

With so many saddle options available, riders have a huge range to choose from. For us, the decision remains simple. We believe in the design, the performance and the outcomes we see every day - which is why, when asked where SMART fits into the mix, our answer is clear: it’s the saddle we will always choose for our own horses.
